Construction presents important opportunities for innovation. Current competitive conditions and owner demands for cost effectiveness provide strong incentives. Examining mechanisms for innovation rather than barriers to technical progress is one means we stimulate growth. At PHL we describe several advantages and disadvantages which the construction industry presents for innovation.

These advantages include project organization, necessity and challenge, engineering and construction integration, low capital investment, capability and experience of key personnel, process emphasis, and variation in methods. Also, major disadvantages for construction such as investment reluctance, competitive conditions, institutional framework, seasonal and economic cyclist, and the role of suppliers.

Based on these conditions, we have developed a set of hypotheses (project demands, individual initiative, construction input to design, and transfer from other industries) concerning possible mechanisms for innovation in construction.

Sustainability is the use of limited natural resources in such a way that we do not run out of them in the future. At PHL, our intelligent design and planning ensures that our customers do not have to worry about any disruption in their daily lives due to electricity and water. The various energy conservation initiatives we have taken will benefit residents by lowering monthly electricity and maintenance bills, while at the same time assuring all basic infrastructures.

PHL makes conscious choices towards sustainable development in all aspects of our projects. Social and economic factors are key drivers in evolving processes and adopting innovations to achieve sustainability. Four broad principles have been evolved to guide sustainable development in our projects in a mutually balanced manner as follows:

1.    Managing water resources in a responsible manner
2.    Managing and creating wealth from waste in the community
3.    Reducing the overall energy consumption of our developments
4.    Building a community aware of its responsibility towards sustainability

These principles will be adhered to in our various projects, from planning to construction and community building

Practical Habitat uses a flexible approach for building value to meet the diverse needs of each client. This approach provides a disciplined, client-focused framework that encourages and empowers management and employees to develop innovative solutions for complex challenges and to constantly improve their work environments and work processes.
